The Titular Feast of our parish fell in Holy Week this year, and was not celebrated on March 25th. Because the Feast of Our Lady of the Annunciation is a major “Solemnity”, it is never omitted, but is moved to the MONDAY after “Atvelykes”, the Sunday after Easter:
ANNUNCIATION PARISH WILL CELEBRATE THE MASS OF THE FEAST OF THE ANNUNCIATION ON MONDAY, APRIL 8, 7:30 PM. WE WILL JOIN THE MEMBERS OF THE SPANISH SPEAKING CONGREGATION, AND A DELEGATION FROM THE ITALIAN SPEAKING CONGREGATION at MT.CARMEL TO OFFER OUR PRAYERS TO THE ALMIGHTY FATHER IN CELEBRATION OF THE WORD MADE FLESH WHEN THE VIRGIN MARY ACCEPTED GOD’S INVITATION TO BE THE MOTHER OF HS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, OUR SAVIOR. Although everyone recognizes that Monday is a work and school night, making it more difficult to come to an evening Mass, The Lithuanian Affairs Committee asks as many as possible come!
REJOICE! Pope Francis has named a NEW ARCHBISHOP for the diocese of Vilnuis! He is Bishop Gintaras Grusas, who visited Annunciation last June! God bless and keep him! He will be installed to succeed the retired Cardinal Backis on the Feast of St. George, April 23! Read all about it: http://www.bernardinai.lt/straipsnis/2013-04-05-vilniaus-arkivyskupijai-paskirtas-naujas-arkivyskupas-vysk-gintaras-grusas/98622
Easter Sunday was a beautiful day in Brooklyn…. Annunciation parish came together to celebrate our Faith’s greatest feast: The Feast of the Resurrection of the Lord! Our high altar and altar of repose were blazing with light from our newly restored brass candelabra. Beautiful new altar cloths and appointments were in evidence. The statue of the risen Christ was in its usual place. Easter lilies were above the altar. The sound of the Clapper preceded the silent procession to the altar of Repose, and Fr. Volertas and the acolytes made their way in silence to the place where, symbolically, “they have taken the Lord”. Soloist Astra Butkus chanted the Psalm 116, in praise of the Holy Trinity, Father Volertas read the great proclamation of Easter, the bells rang, and the procession, with the Blessed Sacrament in our gold monstrance, proceeded three times around the church as the choir and people sang the great hymn of joy, LINKSMA DIENA. Donations for Flowers were received in memory of: All Souls, Samuel Andrade, Jacqueline Capello, Bruna Garcia, Gomez Family, Guadalupe Cruz, Termina Cruz,Daniel Guzman, John Krantz, Lorena Family, Luis Martinez, Rev. Vytautas Palubinskas, Vladas Sidas (3) Ferdinand Toro(2), the family of Oyola and Serrano Velasquez, and Alan Zoglis. Donations to honor Jesus, Rita, Mortilde and Alberto, for the health of Gilda, and an anonymous donation were made.
Following Mass, everyone adjourned to the Parish Lower Hall for the traditional breakfast, and what a feast it was! Easter eggs and black bread! Ham and Sausage and bagels! Fruit! Cheese! Horseradish, red and white! Quiche and cakes! Chocolate candy! Tracey Slizys, Pat Sidas and Asta Barkauskas provided special baked treats for the children! So many people brought cakes and other foods who were not on the sign-up sheet that it is impossible to thank them individually! ACIU VISIEMS!
Many thanks to: Saturday helpers/ hall: Gene Dirsyte, Onute Povilaitis, Monika Sabalis, Paulius Sabalis, Pat Sidas, Matas Slizys, Tracey Slizys. Saturday helpers/church: Phil Caponegro, Algis Lukosevicius, Joe Rudis and Jonas Lukosevicius.

KAVINE NEWS: There is SERIOUS need for a few folk to volunteer to come a few minutes early to help spread the tablecloths and cut the cakes so that Pat Sidas, who regularly opens the hall and starts the coffee, can get to Mass on time. The work is easy, and folk always have fun. Just show up! ACIU! If you want to provide something special at Kavine, please contact Pat Sidas at SID100@SOL.COM so she can help you coordinate your donation. God Bless the KAVINE SET-UP AND CLEAN-UP COMMITTEE. To volunteer to help at Kavine, contact Vida Penikas or Pat Sidas. All you have to do is come half an hour early once in a while to set up the hall, or stay 15-20 minutes longer to clear the tables, fold the cloths, and “wash” the coffee and tea pots. Thanks to the following parishioners who generously made donations to Kavine: The Sidas family, who provided breakfast in memory of Vladas Sidas. Astra Butkus regularly brings leftover tableware and plates for kavine. Nijole Zukauskas made a very generous donation to Kavine. Albina Zumbakis ALWAYS brings a cake when she comes! ACIU!

News from the Diocese of Brooklyn: Did you see the 2013 Annual Catholic Appeal Poster (in THE TABLET)? Look at the right hand bottom corner……….Atnaujanti musu tikejimas per labdaros darbu atlikima! Renewing our Faith through acts of Charity………the motto of this year’s appeal! Last year Annunciation gained almost $3,000 in extra income from the appeal. Our goal this year is to raise at least $3879. We ALL need to make donation to this fund. EVERY donation is a valuable one to both Bishop DiMarzio and Annunciation. Fewer than 50 of us gave last year. If everyone who is a registered member of our parish gave at least $5, we would be at least half way to the goal. Please look for the envelopes in the church and hall, and do your part to support Annunciation AND Bishop DiMarzio and his work for the people of our Diocese of Brooklyn! ALL funds donated above our parish goal are returned to us! With them our sacristan and volunteers are doing WONDERFUL THINGS to restore and repair things in our church. When you come in the right side door, look up. You will see a splendidly shining, newly cleaned, polished and lacquered chandelier. It will knock your sox off, it is so beautiful! The remainder of the chandeliers will soon be done, too.
Other things that are being done in our church include extensive rewiring, overseen by parishioner Mindaugas Zukauskas of UrbanTech Electric. New lights were installed on the Ausros Vartai altar. New wiring for the altar lights and the sound system is also being installed. Algis Kulpa has been helping with this work. Rehabilitation of the many beautiful candelabra that have fallen into disuse is ongoing, with the help of Annunciation Sacristan Phil Caponegro, Algis Lukosevicius (and his helper Jonas!). Cleaning and lacquering our chandeliers will be an ongoing project. Work is also planned for the Mighty Austin Organ (under the watchful eye of Saulius Janusas. ) Fortunately, for the external work to be done on the church (brick pointing, and gutter repairs, for example), monies are available from rental income. ONE HUGE THANK YOU goes from all of us to Joe Rudis, senior volunteer sacristan, Phil Caponegro, Algis Kulpa, Jonas Lukosevicius, and Dr. Algirdas Lukosevicius and his committee of volunteers. Surely, Our Lady of the Annunciation rejoices! Can YOU help with this work? There’s lots to do, so when our parish celebrates its centennial as a Lithuanian parish, in 2014, the church will be gloriously restored anew! Contact Dr. Lukosevicius at algirdas212@yahoo.com. He’ll find a job to fit your talents and skills!
