June is the month of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. We do not often reflect on the fact that Jesus had-has—a real human body like ours, complete with a heart and lungs and kidneys and fingers and toes. We don’t all that often think about His human heart… but, we should. Like our hearts, it held and holds feelings of love and care and concern for others. We are, every one of us, those “others” for whom His heart was and is filled with care. Sacred Heart, Oh Love Divine! Do keep us near to Thee! And make our hearts so like to Thine, that we may holy be…

According to the famous song, June “is bustin’ out all over”… well, great things are “bustin’ out all over” North Fifth and Havemeyer!

First, the NY Lithuanian Scouts Association members, under the direction of Aldute Belzer, came on May 11 and cleared the Havemeyer side yard of weeds, and helped Sexton Phil Caponegro and Volunteer Sacristan Dr. Algis Lukosevicius plant hydrangea bushes and other plants. They even brought along a famous helper… Lithuanian Basketball star Gilvydas Birutas! See the Parish web site for photos: http://www.nyapreiskimo.com/?p=1390

Under the direction of Algis Lukosevicius, Phil Caponegro and Gediminas Sprindys, repairs are being made to one of the Way Crosses in front of the church. On May 18, helpers from age 5—-? came together to clean and sand and wash the Way Cross to the left of the center doors of the church. The wrought iron Cross on the top has been removed for cleaning and repair. The New York ATEITIS Chapter, adults and children, invites anyone who wants to help to join them with the work! For information contact Milda Palubinskas at mild...@yahoo.com .

Work inside our church to clean and repair the many brass fittings and fixtures continues, too.

Electrical wiring is being upgraded, and soon outside work on repairing the previously poorly repaired gutters will begin. Please remember, when you put your donation into the collection basket every Sunday, that the money to do these repairs to our magnificent church has to come from the parishioners this facility serves… THAT’S US!

Across the street from our church, is Sister Nicodema “Square”, a “pocket park” dedicated to an extraordinary Dominican Sister who served our parish and parish school for many years. The City recently “rehabbed” the park, cleaned it up, and made place for new plantings. Thanks to an anonymous donation of marigold plants, and the generosity of our dedicated sexton, Phil Caponegro, flowers will once again bloom in that tiny green oasis!

Sick call list: Elvira Vilineskis, Phyllis Macenas, Liuda Gudelis, and Joe Levonas, and are suffering the assaults of age. Antanas Vytuvis and Regina Gelzinis also need prayers, as does Helen Bagdonas. Dan Schmedlin is doing MUCH better! Good news from North Carolina! Aukse Budreckas has responded to treatment and now is in REMISSION. She says, “A BIG THANK YOU” to all of us for our prayers!

CALLING THE CLASS OF 1969! Rose Ann Perretto Kruger is looking for her classmates, especially Beth Migonis, Joseph Tanaglia, Rita Libretti, Marie Tizzio and Frank Zampelli. Write Pat at SID...@aol.com if you know their “whereabouts”! We welcome Rose Ann to the ZINIOS family.

We also welcome the Pranevicius family, Vaida Grigonyte and Roger Domingo, and Gintaras and Medeja Augulis to our ZINIOS family.

May they rest in Peace… Karolis Dvorak has died. Sad news from Long Island: Longtime Annunciation Choir member Fred Lucka has died (Thank you, Julia Schroeder, for the sad news.)

May 19 was a day of great joy in Annunciation Parish. Osbert Kornelius Augulis, Nida Chacar-Palubinskaitė, Robertas Norvila Chotin, Augusta Domingo, Sean Charles Heerey, Greta Marija Nemickaitė, Ona Pranevičiūtė, Jurgis Mykolas Schmedlen, and Julia Bridget Walsh received the Lord for the first time… their First Holy Communion. Bearing lighted candles, led by Robertas Chotin, they came in procession into the church with Father Volertas and the Mass servers. They sat together, surrounded by their loving families, and their loving fellow parishioners.

The church was filled with beautiful lilies and other flowers and great white bows. Banners adorned their pews. (Thank you Josephina Senken, Regina Senken Walsh and Christina Senken Heery for the decorating of the church!) Parishioners were welcomed at the doors by usherettes Ausra Pranevicius, Arijana Lukosevicius, Gabriella Walsh and Alyssa Walsh, who, under the supervision of Vida Penikas, distributed specially produced (Aciu Raimundas Slizys and Pat Sidas) missalettes for the occasion. Discretely slipping in and out of pews and aisles, parishioner and professional photographer Walter A. Sidas made photographs of the happy event (Check the parish web site in the coming week for the photos!) as a gift to the families. Especially selected music sounded from the Mighty Austin Organ, accompanied by Annunciation Choir, led by Asta Barkauskas.

At the conclusion of the Mass, Parish Trustee Raimundas Slizys and Pastoral Council Member Vida Penikas presented the children with their First Holy Communion certificates, written in magnificent calligraphy by choir member Aukse Edwards, and with a “nested” nativity set, a gift for their lifetimes, from all of us.

The children were taught by Dr. Milda Chacar-Palubinskas, and by their dedicated parents and grandparents under the guidance of Father Volertas, and with the blessing of Parish Administrator Monsignor Calise. Rejoice with them! Rejoice with our parish! Our Lady of the Annunciation, pray for them! Annunciation’s Religious Education program, led by Dr. Chacar-Palubinskas, is alive and well, and waiting for families to register their children for future Confirmation classes and First Holy Communion classes. Contact her about enrolling your child or grandchild (English-only children are also welcome!) in future classes. mild...@yahoo.com

After Mass, everyone was invited to the tastefully decorated Parish Lower Hall (THANK YOU to the parents of the class!) where the parish provided a GALA COMMUNION BREAKFAST for the children, their parents, parishioners, and guests. Special guests, who graciously came to spend a few minutes with the families, were Monsignor Calise, and Rose Marie Walsh, Religious Education Coordinator for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish. A small gift was given to Mrs. Walsh in thanks for her assistance to Annunciation’s Religious Education program. Dr. Palubinskas was presented with a weigilia bush with the thanks of the whole parish for her work in educating our children in the Holy Faith.

Many thanks go to parishioners Antanas Bublis, Simas Chacar-Palubinskas, Laima Sileikyte-Hood, Vida Jankauskas, Aldona Marijosius, Juze Norvila, Irene and Joe Rudis, Vida Penikas, Zilvinas Samsonas, Tracey and Raimundas Slizys, Giedre Stankunas, and Rytas Stankunas for making the event such a success. Thanks, too, to each of the Class families, who, wearing their parishioner hats, brought platters, bowls, and cake plates with salads, ham and cheese, smoked salmon, cookies and snack food for the buffet table. The Nemickas family donated milk, and the Chacar-Palubinskas family brought the centerpieces. Chairman for the event was Parish Events Coordinator Pat Sidas.

Following the Communion Breakfast, the families and their guests continued the party with a catered lunch, provided by THE AVENUE Restaurant. BIG thanks go to Rimas Kezys, along with his two helpers, who timed the arrival of the food perfectly and stayed to help with the clean up!

How on earth could a parish top THAT glorious event, you ask? Well, the following Sunday Annunciation helped Joe and Irene Rudis celebrate their GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY, complete with a hot meal, dancing, accordion playing (Bless you, Vytautas Cereska, who also provided the flowers for the centerpieces!) lots of kissing of the bride, and CHAMPAGNE! Greetings came from Fr. Volertas and Monsignor Calise. Father Haggerty, who often says the Spanish Mass, also stopped by, as did a delegation from the Spanish speaking community, with whom Joe and Irene have worked over the years in the church. Decorating committee for this event consisted of Vida Jankauskas, Monika Vygantas Sabalis, and Paulius Sabalis. Pat Sidas, a long time friend of the happy couple, provided a “wedding” cake, topped with the bride and groom cake topper from hers and the late Vladas’ own wedding cake! Thanks, Irene and Joe for a great party! The GOOD LORD BLESS AND KEEP YOU! You are both a blessing on the lives of us all!

The traditional commemoration of the Mass Deportations of 1941 and beyond will be commemorated June 16 at Annunciation. For more information, please contact Brooklyn-Queens LB Chapter president Rasa Sprindys at vilk...@yahoo.de NEVER FORGET…

KAVINE NEWS: There is SERIOUS need for a few folk to volunteer to come a few minutes early to help spread the tablecloths and cut the cakes so that Pat Sidas, who regularly opens the hall and starts the coffee, can get to Mass on time. The work is easy, and folk always have fun. Just show up! ACIU! If you want to provide something special at Kavine, please contact Pat Sidas at SID...@SOL.COM so she can help you coordinate your donation. God Bless the KAVINE SET-UP AND CLEAN-UP COMMITTEE. To volunteer to help at Kavine, contact Vida Penikas or Pat Sidas. All you have to do is come half an hour early once in a while to set up the hall, or stay 15-20 minutes longer to clear the tables, fold the cloths, and “wash” the coffee and tea pots. THANK YOU to the First Communion families, who donated their left over “things” to Kavine!

CONGRATULATIONS to Robertas Norvila Chotin, who has begun preparation to serve as an altar boy at Annunciation Parish. Another two young fellows have also expressed an interest in serving! Our parish volunteer ranks grow!

News from the Diocese of Brooklyn: Renewing our Faith through acts of Charity Atnaujanti musu tikejimas per labdaros darbu atlikima!… the motto of this year’s appeal! Last year Annunciation gained almost $3,000 in extra income from the appeal. Our goal this year is to raise at least $,3879. We ALL need to make donation to this fund. EVERY donation is a valuable one to both Bishop DiMarzio and Annunciation. Fewer than 50 of us gave last year. If everyone who is a registered member of our parish gave at least $10, we would be nearly half way to the goal. Please look for the envelopes in the church and hall, and do your part to support Annunciation AND Bishop DiMarzio and his work for the people of our Diocese of Brooklyn! Monies from this fund help support the Lithuanian Apostolate!
