The Shrine Church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel will be painted over the next two weeks, so the daily Masses usually said there are being said at ANNUNCIATION! Annunciation cordially welcomes the parishioners of our neighboring parish. If YOU are in the neighbor hood, COME, too!
September is PICNIC TIME at Annunciation Parish. The tradition of our picnic goes back at least 50 years! There will be food, singing and dancing, Lithuania beer, lotteries, and the songs and patter of KOLORADO ROMAS, who was such a hit last year! You don’t have to speak Lithuanian to have fun at this event…you don’teven have to BE Lithuanian to enjoy Anunciation Picnic!
Picnic helpers will be needed to make our picnic, which is the Lithuanian Community’s major parish fundraiser, a big success. How, you ask, can you help? There are LOTS OF WAYS!
First and foremost, you can buy (and sell!) your parish cash lottery tickets. Didn’t get any? Call Joe and Irene Rudis, who organize and produce the mailings and process the receipts faithfully every year. They will see that you get them! Joe usually also has these chance books at Kavine every Sunday. 718-438-4649. EVERYONE CAN DO THIS PICNIC “JOB”!
Please consider making a donation of an item for the traditional Annunciation Picnic “Mini-Lottery”. Traditional folk art, specialty items, or linens are especially appreciated. Contact Ramute Zukas, who has graciously offered to assist with this fundraising project if you have something special to donate, or if you will help with the sale of lottery tickets on the day of the picnic (ramu...@hotmail.com)
Help is needed to decorate the parish hall the afternoon of September 21. Vida Jankauskas has graciously agreed to organize the decorating (And coordinate the outside set up with the Lithuanian Athletic Club!). Can you help? Call Vida at 718-849-2260. GET CREATIVE!
Saturday afternoon, the KUGELIS QUEEN AND HER PRINCESSES need help with potato peeling (You can’t have kugelis without breaking up a few potatoes!), salad making, and general food preparation. Contact Vida Penikas if you can help (vida...@gmail.com).
Some helpers are needed EARLY Sunday morning to help with general tasks and final food preparations. If YOU can help out, please contact Vida Penikas at vida...@gmail.com . Vida has bravely undertaken to organize these parts of the picnic, bless her!
Annunciation’s loyal barkeep Ray (and the faithful assistant barkeep Tracey) needs help keeping the soda and beer and juice flowing at Annunciation “tavern”. Help give Tracey and Ray time off to enjoy the picnic by volunteering to get behind the bar and pour!
Milda Stanislauskas, Antanas Bublis and Matas Slizys will be the “coffee baristas”… They could use another person or two to help out, and they could use donations of CAKES for the Parish Bakery Sales Table! Contact Pat Sidas if you can donate a cake, or a couple cans of coffee, a couple gallons of milk, or a box of herbal teas. (SID...@aol.com)
Sunday, helpers are needed to sell the meal tickets at the door, to help at the bar, to help serve the food, and help with the sale of Mini-Lottery tickets. If you can help out with the BAR, contact Raimundas Slizys at lit...@aol.com. If you can help with SATURDAY or SUNDAY food preparation, contact Vida Jankauskas or Vida Penikas.
lithNYC Festival, a joint event presented by the New York Lithuanian Athletic Club and the Board of Directors of Camp Neringa, will take place in the Annunciation School Yard at 1:00 PM on SATURDAY, September 21! Come for the food, the childrens’ games, and the general comraderie that comes when friends new and old come together. For more information contact Jonas Jankauskas at kopu...@gmail.com . KOLORADO ROMAS will be there!

If you can help, contact Rasa Sprindys at vilk...@gmail.com. For more information about Maironis School, contact dire...@nymaironismokykla.org .
ATEITIS News: Ateitis Week 2013 was a big success. Concerts were presented by pianists Dr. Frances Covalesky, Darius Shubertas, and Chris Staknys The grand finale concert was with mezzo soprano Dana Mileika and Maryte Bizinkauskaite, accompanied by Dr. Covalesky.
Our guest speakers were journalist Vidmantas Valiusaitis and Tomas Girnius, Ateitis Federation president, who led a discussion about Knights of Lithuania, Vyciai, an organization celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year, and Elona Vaisnys. There was a presentation about the recent Lithuanian museum show of the works of Regina Ingelevicius. She was the mother of Mara Vygantas, and Monika Sabalis’ grandmother. Her art work is on display in many museums. Family day, which included Sports Day organized by Alex Lileika, PT and the traditional simulated radio program by Dalia Dzikas and her son. Next year Ateitis Week will be from 8/2 -8/9 2014.
HELP! She needs SOMEBODY! Violinist Justina Aukyselyte, a SCHOLARSHIP student from Lithuania at Juilliard School of Music, is seeking a place to “board” while she studies in New York. If you can help, or provide information about someone else who can, call 212-354-7840!
STEEL WOLF Lithuanian Rock Band is featured in the current issue of Good Times magazine! This is their THIRTIETH YEAR together! Steel Wolf will be performing next on September 7th from 4:15-5:45 at the Covert Ave. Street Fair at the corner of Tulip & Covert Avenues, Floral Park, NY. Congratulations to Arunas Banionis on having his design selected for the Lithuanian Postal Service’s 2013 Darius and Girenas commemorative stamp! Arunas is the brother-in-law of ZINIOS readers Algis and July Minkunas Banionis, cousin of Laima Lileika Shea and Dalia Dzikas.
Congratulations to the newly elected governing board of the new NEW YORK CHAPTER of the Lithuanian American Community:
Laurynas Vismanas and Rasa Sprindys, co-presidents;
Vida Jankauskas, vice president; Gelmina Židelytė, secretary; Laima Šileikytė-Hood, treasurer;
Arūnas Tirkšliūnas, press secretary, Jonas Jankauskas, liaison to the Lithuanian Athletic Club, and members Gintarė Bukauskienė and Raimundas Šližys.
Sick call list: Elvira Vilineskis, Phyllis Macenas, Liuda Gudelis, and Joe Levonas, and are suffering the assaults of age. Antanas Vytuvis and Regina Gelzinis also need prayers, as does Helen Bagdonas.
May they rest in Peace… Dr. Janina Snieska died. She is survived by her son Dr. Kazys Snieska.
“Tevas” Pranciskus Giedgaudas, OFM, longtime Administrator of the Lithuanian newspaper DARBININKAS, has died.
When you look at Annunciation altar you may notice that the Bishop’s Chair that the Mass celebrant had been using has been removed from the altar and has been replaced by the chair purchased and used many years ago to be the celebrant’s chair. Our “cathedra”, which may well be part of the original 1870 furnishings of our church, is a large ornate chair that traditionally was used exclusively by the bishop when he came to visit. It has now blessedly been returned to that function, so Bishop DiMarzio will have a proper place to sit when he comes to visit! (The cathedra is now kept in the sacristy.)
Our Mighty Austin Organ is undergoing repair! Monsignor Calise has authorized repairs to the air pressure regulation system that will vastly improve the sound of OPUS 288. Did you know that our fabulous pipe organ is an heroic survivor? According to THE TABLET, at one time there were over 900 pipe organs in the diocese. NOW THERE ARE ONLY 70! Annunciation is proud to still have the sound of a pipe organ resounding through our church on Sundays! “Praise Ye Him with the organ, and stringed instruments!” (Psalm 150)
Other repairs are slowly being made around our church. WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE THE FRONT DOORS! They are newly varnished, the wrought iron “hinges” newly painted, and the brass door handles scrubbed and shined. The repairs have been completed to the “left” way shrine, thanks to Algis Lukosevivius and Phil Caponegro. It will be “rededicated” after Mass on September 22!
Sometimes, in summertime, especially, Annunciation runs short of ALTAR BOYS… Did YOU used to serve at Annunciation’s (or some other parish’s) Altar as a boy or youth? There is NO REASON that you can’t pitch in again and serve, even if your serving days were in the “Old Mass” days, or you never had the privilege! No one will make you “suit up”, but Algis Lukosevicius is more than happy to help you with a cassock and surplice if you are willing! Wouldn’t it be a beautiful thing for our parish to have a SENIOR ALTAR SERVERS CORPS ready and willing to assist Father Volertas at the altar when the young guys can’t? Contact Algis at algirdas 2...@yahoo.com!
Annunciation’s Religious Education program is alive and well, and waiting for families to register their children for future Confirmation classes and First Holy Communion. To enroll your child or grandchild (English-only children are also welcome!) in future classes, contact mild...@yahoo.com. Childrens Liturgy (VAiku Liturgija) will begin soon. Contact Milda for details!
KAVINE NEWS: If you want to provide something special at Kavine, please contact Pat Sidas at SID...@SOL.COM so she can help you coordinate your donation. God Bless the KAVINE SET-UP AND CLEAN-UP COMMITTEE. To volunteer to help at Kavine, contact Vida Penikas or Pat Sidas. All you have to do is come half an hour early once in a while to set up the hall, or stay 15-20 minutes longer to clear the tables, fold the cloths, and “wash” the coffee and tea pots. HELP IS DESPERATELY NEEDED A 9:30 AM! Thanks to the Pietrusiewicz family, who celebrated what would have been the late Martin’s and our dear Jean’s GOLDEN WEDDING DAY with a generous luncheon at Kavine. Thanks to Elaine Derso for the donation of plastic tableware! Juze Norvila brought some wonderful “pizelles”, and Albina Zumbakis brought some special strudel!

News from the Diocese of Brooklyn: Renewing our Faith through acts of Charity : Atnaujanti musu tikejimas per labdaros darbu atlikima! is the motto of this year’s appeal! Our goal this year is to raise at least $3879. Every penny raised above that sum COMES BACK TO ANNUNCIATION! Even MORE comes back in the form of diocesan support for Father Volertas’ work as coordinator of the Lithuanian Apostolate. We ALL need to make donation to this fund. EVERY donation, any size, is a valuable one to both Bishop DiMarzio and Annunciation. FEWER THAN 50 of us gave last year. That won’t DO! EVERYONE is expected to offer SOMETHING, no matter how small…
We ALL need to do our part to support the diocese AND our parish. Bishop Di MArzio will take care of the work of the Diocese. WE need to see to the work at our parish! Please look for the envelopes in the church and hall, and do your part to support Annunciation AND Bishop DiMarzio and his work for the people of our Diocese of Brooklyn! If you prefer to MAIL your donation, make it payable to ANNUAL APPEAL and send it to 310 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn, NY 11215
