February is a month filled with holidays……………The Great Emancipator, Abraham Lincoln, was born February 12. George Washington, “Father” of our country, was born February 22. Lithuania declared its independence February 16. February 14 is universally celebrated as the Feast of St. Valentine. “Mardi Gras” (Shrove Tuesday) is celebrated in many forms in many places on the day before Ash Wednesday.
February is also Black History Month. Every nation whose sons and daughters make up the heart and soul of this country celebrate their “history” in some way. The history of those who came from Africa,, by their free will or not, is very real in Brooklyn, and all of New York. Free Africans founded Weeksville, a Brooklyn neighborhood that still exists. That great American art form, Jazz, was brought to the world in the Harlem of the late 19th and early 20th Century. All a part of that amazing thing we call the melting pot!
SNOW! 29 inches of it! Inundated North 5th and Havemeyer on Sunday, January 24! Father Volertas was unable to get to the church to say Mass. Msgr. Calise generously offered to come after the Italian Mass at Mt. Carmel, but he could not get to the church before 10:30 AM, and he advised that the streets were in such bad condition that there was NO PLACE TO PARK. Sadly, the decision was made to cancel the 10:00AM Mass for the safety of all.
Lent begins February 10, Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. In addition, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast for those 21-59.
The annual parish Lenten Retreat will be held February 27/28. Our guest Retreat Master will be Father Kestutis Ralys, from Vilnuis. The retreat will begin Saturday Afternoon, (time to be determined) and conclude at Kavine Sunday morning. Father will concelebrate Mass with Fr. Volertas, and will hear confessions. Make the time to come. It will be good for your soul!
The annual celebration of Lithuanian Independence will be celebrated February 20 and 21.On February 20, at 6:00 PM, there will be a concert in Annunciation Church. Violinist Barbora Valiukeviciute will be the soloist. The New York Theatre group will deliver poetry readings, and Consul General Pranevicius will speak. After the program there will be refreshments in the Annunciation Parish Lower Hall. Sunday, February 21, the traditional Mass for Lithuania will be said in Annunciation Church, Father Volertas, celebrant.
On January 17 the parish, in conjunction with the New York Chapter of the Lithuanian American Community commemorated the frightful murders at the Vilnius TV Tower in 1991. Before the Offertory of the Mass, a procession of adults and children carried photos of those murdered and burning candles to the Altar where they were placed on the rail. After Mass, in the Parish Lower Hall, Consul General Pranevicius spoke of the horrors of that terrible day. Maironis School Children Elzbieta Kungys, Greta Nemickas, and Elena Pranevicius recited poetry in honor of the dead. Many thanks go to Maironis School Principal Rasa Sprindys for organizing the children’s presentation, Vida Jankauskas for acting as Mistress of Ceremonies, and members of the Executive Committee of the NYLB Chapter, under the leadership of Vida Jankauskas and Ramute Hopanus for preparing the refreshments. Following the program the Robert Mullan film „Mes Dainuosim”, with subtitles, was shown. The film poignantly follows the path of those murdered as they made their way to the TV Tower.
